Still Blue Reviews (2012-09-28)

What a fantastic record, listening to it for the second time in a row and can’t get enough of it. Bill has a strong blues-friendly voice and plays some mean guitar the old-school way. His backing band is solid and knows their craft making those songs on “Still Blue” so sweet. Together with beautiful packing this all makes for a very fine disc.

Bill Johnson is a true artist and a master of the blues. As a music fan, a Blues music fan and especially an appreciator of well played blues guitar, I count the times I've been called on by Bill to play with him as standouts in my career. This is a guy who really gets it. Bill's no BS approach to this OFTEN overplayed and watered down style of music is refreshing. His concern for good, fat tone on guitar and his "steeped in the style" vocals make it exciting to be on stage with him.

…Bill Johnson has the most talent hands down of any blues performer in Western Canada that I have ever seen and heard, be that electric or acoustic. His strong and soulful singing is a natural match to his wonderful guitar tone, and he is someone worthy of far more attention than he is getting. I am not in the least surprised that Bill was nominated for Best Blues Album for the 2012 Junos. I guess it’s kind of a good thing that he moved around a bit when he was a kid and we all know it’s hard enough to start at a new school at the age of nine never mind be in a new city. Combine that with the fact that his brother loved the Blues it’s no wonder he became obsessed with the Blues and became a professional guitarist at the age of fifteen. Bill has certainly paid his dues he’s performed and recorded with greats like Donald Ray Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Cash McCall andSon Seals. From the opening track Fishing With Your Boots On all the way to the last note ofRemote Control Band, this album kept me mesmerized! A must for any Blues collection! The 15th Annual Maple Blues Awards      January 18, 2012Author: Eric Thom                                                      B.C’s Bill Johnson, nominated for Blues Guitarist of the Year, took the opportunity to contrast his low-key presence with a performance of “Half The Man” and a series of scorching leads for a taste of how he does what he does differently than most, notably so.
